Historic defense tower in Tabarca
Torreón de San José is a tower on the Isla Tabarca. The tower was designed by Baltasar Ricoud and erected in 1789. In the XIXth century, it was used as state prison, however its initial role was surveillance and defense against Turkish and Berber pirates.
Torreón de San José has a rectangular plan, with three floors and inner courtyard. The tower had sentries at every corner and openings for artillery at every level. Since 1945, the tower was included in the historic patrimony of Spain (Patrimonio Histórico Español).
