Important procession site
Ermita de Santa Cruz is a sanctuary on the slopes of Mount Benacantil, in the picturesque Santa Cruz neighbourhood. Its history can be traced back to the 12th century, when a small mosque used to stand at the top of the mountain.
The mosque was “purified” by King Alfonso X, at the request of his wife Queen Violante, and opened to Catholic worship in 1271. But Ermita de Santa Cruz was only extended in the 18th century by Carmelite friars who opened here a school.
Ermita de Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz Hermitage) is extremely popular during the Holy Week, when there are a number of processions that depart from here.
