One of the largest palm groves in the world
Palmeral of Elche is among the largest plantations of trees in the world. It is a picturesque sight, attracting many visitors who enjoy Elche also for its numerous shoe stores (Elche is the largest producer of footwear in Europe).
Palmeral of Elche includes the Parque Municipal and many other orchards, including one in the heart of the city. Most of the palms in the palmeral are date palms. Elche has a long tradition in growing palm trees, dating at least since the Iberian times, around the fifth century B.C. The palm orchards of Elche have been declared Humanity’s Heritage by UNESCO.
