A garden with more than 4,000 plant species
Hortus Botanicus has been here since 1682, although it was set up 50 years earlier when East India Company ships brought back tropical plants and seeds originally intended to supply doctors with medicinal herbs.
Some of those specimens (which include the oldest potted plant in the world, a 300-year-old cycad) are still here in the palm greenhouse – which itself dates from 1912 – while three other greenhouses maintain desert, tropical and subtropical climates. There’s also a new butterfly house.
