Famous skinny bridge over the Amstel River
Magere Brug is no longer skinny (Mager means skinny in Dutch). It was rebuilt to accommodate two-way traffic. The Old Dutch design wooden bridge is a double-swipe (balanced) bridge. It is beautiful to see, especially at night when the lights make it very romantic - a popular place for pictures.
From the Magere Brug tourists can glimpse all kinds of boats on the beautiful Amstel River. Occasionally rowing teams are seen preparing for or participating in races. The bridge opens up for large boats to pass. This is a wonderful spot in the center of the city to observe the river.
