A hotel shortage in recent years has meant the building of several new big high-end hotels, from the modern middle-of-the-road Mövenpick to the truly grand Grand Hotel Amrath. But those trying to find Amsterdam hotels on a budget, still have to book ahead to score something more original. A more modern option is the ‘budget-luxury’ CitizenM, built from shipping containers, which is soon expanding from Schiphol airport to a more central location.
