Centuries of creativity

Described by many as a village, Amsterdam packs the cultural punch of a city many times its size. While still retaining a bit of a ‘sex, drugs and rock 'n’ roll' reputation, Amsterdam is now more about being a ‘creative city’ where the high standards set by such Golden Age painters as Rembrandt are maintained. The city has become a global hub for art, design, architecture and advertising, but one where all its attractions are just a short and scenic bike ride away.

HEMA

A chain discount department store

Stay Editor's Note

If you need it HEMA has it. That may be an exaggeration, but they do have all of the basics a traveler might need: toothbrushes, clothing, stationery, food, and so much more. HEMA carries its own brand of clothing and goods and has become an institution in Holland. Celebrities have made it an icon by wearing HEMA t-shirts.

HEMA has a warehouse feel to it; finding your way around is part of the adventure. It is a unique store and very customer friendly. There is usually a café too. These stores are springing up everywhere. There seems to be one on every corner. Stop in to find a bargain on socks, toiletries, household items, decorations, or a basic t-shirt with HEMA emblazoned on the front.
