Hutongs are streets made up of traditional Chinese homes
Hutongs are the alleys that form between traditional Chinese homes. These homes contained courtyards and the alleys connected one residence to another. Beijing is a city that is known for its Hutongs. Many of these traditional neighborhoods have sites of historical interest.
Hutongs vary widely. Some are rough, unsafe areas. Others contain many charming buildings of interest. If you are going to take a tour of the hutongs, be sure to book it in advance with a well-known touring company that can help you find the safe areas.
