Nowadays Beijing's shopping extends beyond the Silk Market and its cheap knockoff Louis Vuitton bags. The market's still there of course, but more of the city's residents are aspiring to the real thing. Luxury shopping malls such as the sparkly Shin Kong Place and the California-style Solana Mall have sprung up left, right and centre in recent months. However there's still a 40 per cent tax on all luxury goods, so stick to brilliant independent boutiques such as Spin, Grifted, Plastered and The Shard Box instead.
