The river island where Berlin was born is today a part of Mitte known as Museumsinsel ('Museum Island') and houses the bulk of the city's major collections. Their prominently central location reflects the esteem in which museums are held in Germany's capital, but there are many others in Kreuzberg, Charlottenburg and the southwestern district of Dahlem. Twice a year they all come alive, animated with special events for the popular Lange Nacht der Museen.
