Traditionally, the city’s most prominent commercial art galleries have resided in the townhouses of genteel Newbury Street, but in the past few years the once-edgy South End warehouse enclave known by the New York-style acronym SoWa (South of Washington Street) has blossomed into a thriving studio-gallery complex. Due to the financial downturn, the Boston art galleries scene is in flux, with spaces closing and relocating. The most cutting-edge scene is in lower-rent areas such as Jamaica Plain.
