Where sacred and laic intertwine

Cologne is a blend of spiritual and secular. It is an important pilgrimage destination: the relics of the Magi are said to be kept in the Shrine of the Three Kings at the Kölner Dom. It is also the host of one of the most fun and exciting carnivals in Germany and the world: the Kölner Karneval, which lasts 6 days in February, each year. The city’s most famous landmark, the Dom, is the fourth largest church in the world, and the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe. Cologne is also famous for Eau de Cologne (Kölnisch Wasser) – a fragrance so popular in the 18th century that it became synonymous with perfume all over the world.
