Preserving Dubai's maritime roots
Not far from the Bur Dubai Abra docks (close to Al-Gharhoud Bridge), along the Dubai Creek, the Dhow Building Yard is an extensive marina, where you can see boat builders at work. They are still using traditional tools and Sheesham wood to build the dhows that ply on the creek.
The craft that made the gorgeous old-style dhows is still there, and the boats are still build by hand, according to a tradtional design. The only difference is that nowadays, the old blokes pop an engine on the back before sliding the boat into the waters of the Dhow Building Yard. Notably, this is the world’s biggest dhow building center. You’ll always see the boat builders at work - as 20-30 boats are built at the same time.
