The Church of St. Minias on the Mountain
Basilica di San Miniato al Monte was raised as a homage to St. Minias. San Miniato was an Armenian prince who served in the army of Decius (ca. 201- June 251), but later became a hermit. He was denounced as Christian, so the Emperor decided to throw him to beasts in the Amphitheatre.
According to the legend, the panther that was supposed to kill him refused to attack him, so Miniato had to be beheaded in the presence of the Emperor. A shrine for the saint was built on the hill of Mons Fiorentinus. More than a thousand years later, in 1013, Bishop Alibrando began construction to what is today known as Basilica di San Miniato al Monte.
