Scotland's oldest medieval church
Glasgow Cathedral was founded in 543 AD by patron saint St Mungo. The site of the church was originally a Christian burial ground. This is Scotland’s oldest medieval church, but it has seen many phases of construction. The church now houses the Church of Scotland.
Destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1197, the present church is actually a Gothic style dating from the 13th century. Interestingly, Glasgow University was founded was also founded at the church over 500 years ago. The church is open to the public but please inquire as the times vary.
