A church that rocks
Designed by Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen and opened in 1969, the Temppeliaukion Kirkko was built in the rock of the Temppeliaukio (Temple square). This is why the church is also known as the “Rock Church.” It is one of the most popular attractions in Helsinki, with a million people visiting annually.
The interior was excavated and built into the rock, but is bathed in natural light entering through the glazed dome. Temppeliaukion Kirkko is also a popular concert venue, due to its excellent acoustics.
