Medieval town near Helsinki
First mentioned in documents in the early 14th century, Porvoo is only 50 kilometers east of Helsinki - a favorite weekend escape for residents and tourists alike. The town gets its name from a Swedish earth fortress near the river Porvoonjoki.
Porvoo is particularly visited for its “Old Town” (Gamla Stan in Swedish), an historic village with wooden houses, and a dense medieval street pattern. Some good restaurants and local boutiques complete the experience. Other than that, Porvoo is peaceful and quiet, not an attraction for party animals.
