Monument celebrating a number of famous Portuguese explorers
Padrão dos Descobrimentos celebrates a number of Portuguese explorers. Many of history’s most famed explorers are immortalized in statue or frieze at this site. The memorial features a historic Portuguese coat of arms and a marble map with the dates of significant discoveries marked in metal.
Padrão dos Descobrimentos is located along the Tagus river. The memorial, an impressive structure, opened in 1960. The opening ceremonies were part of the celebrations surrounding the 50th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator. It is over 50 meters high. The memorial is open daily, Tuesday through Sunday.
