Museum of the City of Lisbon
In 1962 the city council took over the 18th-century Pimenta Palace with a view to founding a museum to chart Lisbon's history. While some displays are skimpy, they cover the ground as best they can, starting with the Stone Age and working through Roman times to the Visigoths and Moors.
There is a reminder of the links between Portugal and Britain in the form of a bust of Dona Beatriz, the illegitimate daughter of Dom João I who married the fifth Earl of Arundel. Also worth seeing is a large model of Lisbon before the 1755 earthquake, the fabulously tiled palace kitchens, and the formal garden with its peacocks. The displays have Portuguese labels only, but there is a (poorly translated) English leaflet.
