Tradition trumps modernity, but fresh ingredients rule
You can get Italian or Indian food in Lisbon restaurants – even vegetarians won’t go hungry these days – but dining is at its best in neighbourhood tascas that serve bacalhau (salt cod) and cozido (stew), or in places where chefs offer a new take on Portuguese cuisine. Locals eat far more fish than other Europeans and excellent seafood is available, but avoid it in cheaper places where ingredients are not displayed.
