40,000 year old tar pits-the only spot in LA without a facelift!

The Rancho La Brea tar pits are estimated to be about 40,000 years old. Thus far some 3.5 million fossils have been retrieved from them; they are believed to have the largest and most diverse assemblage of extinct Ice Age plants and animals in the world.

The stinky pits continue to bubble and pop, and in the old-fashioned museum visitors can watch ancient bones being cleaned and repaired, and check out displays and vignettes of items recovered from the pits.
