Menorca's exotic cathedral
The Catedral of Menorca in Ciutadella stands in a site previously occupied by a mosque and its construction began in 1303 to celebrate the Christian conquest of the island. The mosque’s minaret now serves as the bell tower.
Conflict continued around the Catedral de Menorca, however, and the solid masonry supporting the buttresses was added after a Turkish raid in the 16th century. In contrast, parts of the interior are wonderfully ornate – particularly the baroque Chapel of the Souls.
