The rise of rural tourism
Particularly on Mallorca, the majority of tourists have traditionally stayed in the purpose-built resorts that line the Bay of Palma. In recent years, though, efforts have been made to diversify the Balearic Islands' appeal and attract visitors year-round. Rural tourism has been promoted strongly in Mallorca and its more low-key neighbour Menorca; beyond the beaches the islands' scenery is spectacular. Mallorca has also opened several new boutique hotels that set a new benchmark in style and comfort.
