Visit the angel monument

The Monumento a la Independencia was established in 1910 to commemorate the centennial celebration of Mexico’s War of Independence. The monument is also referred to as El Ángel which was sculpted by Antonio Rivas Mercado.

The Monumento a la Independencia is a tall Corinthian column that has been considered as the city’s symbol. El Ángel is a golden statue of Winged Victory which stands to honour the skulls of some of the war’s main protagonists that lie at the monument’s pedestal.

Other attractions in the Monumento a la Independencia include the four figures made in Carrara which is situated at the four corners of the column’s base which stands to represent justice, law, peace and war. You can also find a lion crowned with laurels.
