South Florida's oldest building
The Cape Florida Lighthouse was built in 1825, and is currently the oldest building in South Florida. The 95-foot lighthouse originally guided sailors through the dangerous waters along the Straits of Florida. Though removed from service many times during various wars, it has weathered the years extraordinarily well.
The US Coast Guard uses it as a navigational device, as do sailors still as either a way point or landmark. The site is part of the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park now. Guests can take guided tours, or explore the great old structure by themselves. There is also a great open-air Lighthouse Cafe.
