The Second World War took a heavy toll on the city and the resultant combination of old and new gives it a different ambiance to many Italian cities. Also the Milanese are less inclined to sit drinking coffee in a piazza and more concerned with driving forward the national economy. But while Milan attractions don’t reveal themselves instantly to the visitor, they reward those that explore the neighbourhood churches, the peaceful courtyards and the city’s vibrant and dynamic lifestyle.
