Sylvan retreat in the city
Just beyond the statue of Beauregard, City Park sits on the former site of the Allard Plantation. It’s a beautiful place – 1,400 acres of land shaded by enormous moss-draped oaks and laced with streams and bayous which are crossed by charming, arched bridges.
Some of the trees at City Park are more than 1,000 years old, and their huge branches reach down so far that they touch the earth. Swans float languidly by, and wild geese roam – watch out; they’ll nip if you get too close. This is one of the loveliest parks in the country. Only one golf course open post-Katrina, other features have been repaired, restored, reopened.
