A veiw of La Conciergerie

Over history this landmark has been a palace and a prison

La Conciergerie is a 14th Century Gothic structure located on Ile de la Cite. Built by Phillipe the Fair (1284-1314) it was originally the palace of kings. In later years, it was a prison, and during the French Revolution, hundreds of people were taken from here and executed by guillotine.

Among the almost 3,000 people who were imprisoned and guillotined during the French Revolution were Marie-Antoinette and the wife of Louis XVI. Today, those cells have been reconstructed as they were in the day when these famous people were imprisoned there. There are also historical mementos to view during a visit to La Conciergerie.
