History and party time
Piazza Dante is the site of several archaeological discoveries of recent nature, including the remains of a Roman villa of the Augustan period, and traces of a road built during the Middle Ages. However, the square itself only dates from the fourteenth century.
Piazza Dante is where Lorenzo the Magnificent (Lorenzo de' Medici) established the new University of Pisa. Piazza Dante is still a popular student hangout. Every year, after the fireworks ending the Luminara of Saint Ranieri, Piazza Dante becomes the center of the street party.
