Old fortress offers great views of the Guanabara Bay
Long time ago, Fortaleza de São João used to be known known as Forte São Teodósio. It got its current name in 1618 when the elaborate stone gate was added to the fortress. The building was further fortified in 1872, when it also received modern weapons, cannons and more.
From the old Fortaleza de São João (complete name Fortaleza de São João da Barra do Rio de Janeiro) you can only see today the old gate and some ruins. In the neighborhood there is a military beach, off limits for tourists. The fortress offers beautiful views of the Guanabara Bay, and many good photo opportunities.
