Rome has been welcoming tourists and traders from around the known world since ancient times, but until recently its hotels catered primarily for either the well-heeled or the budget-conscious. The flourishing of mid-range hotels in the centro storico has forced the luxury end of the market to up their game, including the conversion of several palazzi into boutique hotels. Similarly, many of the cheap pensioni have also received a revamp to remain competitive.
