Historic Roman Catholic church
The Cathedral of the Madeleine is the mother church of the Diocese of Salt Lake City. The cathedral was built in 1909 under the direction of the Lawrence Scanlan, first bishop of Salt Lake. The Neo-Romanesque building was designed by architects Carl M. Newhausen and Bernard O. Mecklenburg.
The exterior of the Cathedral of the Madeleine contrasts with the Neo-Gothic interior, created under the direction of Joseph S. Glass, the second bishop of Salt Lake. The architect in charge of the interior was John Theodore Comes, who was fascinated with the Spanish Gothic style.
