A National Historic Landmark since 1977

The 1,200 acre Balboa Park was named after Vasco Núñez de Balboa, a Spanish explorer, governor, and conquistador best known for being first European who led an expedition that reached the Pacific from the New World. The park was opened in 1835, being one of the oldest of its kind in the USA.

Some of the most important attractions in Balboa Park include the San Diego Museum of Man, the San Diego Museum of Art, the San Diego Air & Space Museum, the Old Globe Theatre complex, the outdoor amphitheatre Starlight Bowl and the San Diego Zoo.
