America's most relaxed city

San Francisco is a city that wears its charms on its sleeve. The views of the bay, ocean and woods to the north and east from this very walkable city’s famous hills are spectacular, as is the food, nightlife and intellectual climate. From its true birth during the Gold Rush, the city by the Bay has been home to renegades, social movements and artists of all stripes. Don’t miss the vibrant Mission District, cool North Beach, or the shopping Mecca of Union Square.

East Coast Grill

Seafood supreme

Stay Editor's Note

On paper, East Coast Grill’s concept must have looked pretty fuzzy: how could the then-unknown Chris Schlesinger possibly pull off a tropically tinged seafood shack/barbecue pit complete with raw bar and tiki lounge?

But the disparate elements proved wildly harmonic; 20-plus years on, the chow’s still as spicy as the attitude, and the crowd’s full of jumping beans.
