Córdoba's wondrous Mezquita
The site of the Mezquita in Córdoba was previously occupied by a Roman temple and Visigothic cathedral before the Moors built a splendid mosque here in the 8th Century.
The Mezquita remains one of the best preserved examples of the architectural style, with a deliberately unprepossessing exterior that increases the wonder you feel when you step inside. The interior’s countless red and white arches are supported by a forest of pillars and the effect is spellbinding.
