The real Siracusa
The offshore Island of Ortygia was once occupied by the Greek colonists. They built fortifications and other structures, some of which still exist today. The temples of Apollo and Athena are two notable examples.
Ortigia is actually the historical heart of the Siracusa. But these days the Island is famous for its chic cafes, bars, and shopping as for any ancient ruin. You’ll find yourself gravitating to this Island center during your visit to Siracusa.
