Vasa Museum (Vasamuseet)

A maritime museum in Stockholm

The Vasa Museum (Vasamuseet) is located on the island of Djurgården and, since 1990, it is the most visited museum in Scandinavia. The building was constructed around the dry dock of the old naval yard and it hosts an almost intact 17th century ship.

The enormous Vasa warship, which sank on its maiden voyage in 1628, was recovered 333 years later from Stockholm Harbour. The museum, with more than a million visitors a year, has six viewing levels, a re-created gun deck you can walk through, and an exhibit on 17th-century life and shipbuilding.

Near the keel, the museum displays the skeletons of ten people who died aboard the ship, alongside reconstructions of how they might have looked in life.
