On this location since 1885
The Art Gallery of New South Wales includes a solid collection of 19th- and 20th century Australian artists, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, big names in European art history and international contemporary artists, plus a fine Asian art collection.
There are also regular blockbuster touring shows from overseas galleries. One of its most popular and controversial exhibitions is the annual Archibald Prize, a portraiture competition, which is complemented by the Wynne (landscape and sculpture) and Sir John Sulman (best 'subject/genre paintings' and murals) competitions.
Wednesday is late-opening night, with free talks, debates and performances, and there are regular events for kids. Tours of the general collection are held two or three times a day.
