The city of the Seven Mountains

De syv fjell (The Seven Mountains) surround the center of the misty harbor town of Bergen. Nestled on the country’s rocky west coast, Bergen is exciting and charming, an ideal starting point for fjord tours and cruises. Bryggen – the medieval fish market street - also known as Tyskebryggen (the German Wharf), is one of the city’s most picturesque sights. Bryggen has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site since 1979 – a well deserved accolade, for its unique architecture.

obligatory mountain visit alert For those feeling full of beans, it’s a mildish walk with pretty views all the way up. For those less physically able there’s a funicular with rival views. Sundays will be packed so my advice: get lost from the crowds – there are many routes up. And down.

The best panoramic view of Bergen's harbor and Islands

Stay.com Editors' Note

Floibanen affords visitors one of the best views overlooking Bergen. A short trip up the famous Funicular, brings sightseers to the top of Mount Floyen. From this vantage point, 320 meters above sea level (1050 ft), the harbor and Islands can readily be discerned.

Numerous walking paths also reveal beautiful woodland terrain amid lakes and the mountains. In Summer, the restaurant at the top offers nice traditional cuisine, while the souvenir shops remain open year round. Mount Floyen and the Funicular are easily accessible, as the lower Funicular station is at the Fish Market in Bergen’s center.
