The city of the Seven Mountains

De syv fjell (The Seven Mountains) surround the center of the misty harbor town of Bergen. Nestled on the country’s rocky west coast, Bergen is exciting and charming, an ideal starting point for fjord tours and cruises. Bryggen – the medieval fish market street - also known as Tyskebryggen (the German Wharf), is one of the city’s most picturesque sights. Bryggen has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site since 1979 – a well deserved accolade, for its unique architecture.

A fine example of the Romanesque period Editors' Note

The oldest building in Bergen, St. Mary Church (Mariakirken) dates from the early 1300’s. It is one of the most outstanding Romanesque churches in Norway, or anywhere in Europe for that matter.

The most significant aspect of the church is its pulpit, considered by many tobe the finest example of Baroque decorative art in the country. St. Mary Church (Mariakirken) is located near the center of Bergen, and within walking distance of almost any attraction there. A great little walk through the past and the beauty of the Romanesque period.
