The city of the Seven Mountains

De syv fjell (The Seven Mountains) surround the center of the misty harbor town of Bergen. Nestled on the country’s rocky west coast, Bergen is exciting and charming, an ideal starting point for fjord tours and cruises. Bryggen – the medieval fish market street - also known as Tyskebryggen (the German Wharf), is one of the city’s most picturesque sights. Bryggen has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site since 1979 – a well deserved accolade, for its unique architecture.

Stay.com Editors' Note

Permanenten was built by the architect Henry Bucher in 1886, and was intended as Bergen’s cultural palace. The building initially housed the Trade and Industry Association, and a host of other organizations.

Today the West Norway Museum of Decorative Art (Vestlandske Kunstindustrimuseum) uses the entire venue to exhibit items representing the techniques and materials used in decorative art from the 16th Century until the present.

Glass, porcelain, ceramics, metal works, fashion, textiles, furniture and carving techniques and examples are covered over this 500 year period. The China Collection alone is Northern Europe’s largest. A superb museum of some of the most beautiful and ornate creations ever made.
