A city of beautifully faded elegance

Panoramically divided by the Danube, Hungary’s capital exudes faded grandeur. Comprised of busy Pest and residential Buda, the Habsburg city of grand boulevards and elegant bridges was built in the late 1800s. With its five-star hotels, spa baths, landmark coffeehouses and key restaurants wonderfully restored, Budapest provides top-notch services. An underground counterculture and savage party scene complete the picture of this cool, modern city.

Budapest reprieve with parks and ruins Editors' Note

Margaret Island (Margitsziget) is relatively small, and sits in central Budapest, right in the middle of the Danube. Covered in landscaped parks, the island is a great place to take the kids for some outdoor recreation. You’ll also find medieval ruins here, adding some adventure to your visit.

Spanning the area between the Margaret Bridge and the Arpad Bridge, the ruins at Margaret Island (Margitsziget) hark back to the Middle Ages, reminding of the religious influence that was once over the land. The island has been modified in recent times, keeping it and the city safe from floods.
