Oak trees and gorgeous Bay views

Across the bridge from San Francisco, Oakland has a enough for a few pleasant days. The city is home to the USS Potomac, alongside the city’s museum, art galleries, and parks. Shopping is fun in Oakland too, especially if you have a passion for hats - there is no men’s hat store quite like The Hat Guys. For gifts, souvenirs, good dining, and other shopping opportunities, follow College Avenue - it’s a local favorite.

This $49 weeknight prix fixe menu in picturesque Jack London Square offers a lot of sophistication without fully emptying your wallet. A glorious splendor of fresh ingredients is arrayed in the bread course alone.

Sophisticated Californian fare Editors' Note

Haven is a chic restaurant serving Modern American food. This popular eatery is situated near Jack London Square, right at the yacht harbor on the Oakland Estuary. It serves comforting, creative Californian fare and a strong cocktail range.

Part of Daniel Patterson’s restaurant group, Haven is a stylish eatery offering inventive culinary twists on American family favorites. As well as outside seating, the venue has a relaxed, contemporary dining room with a beautiful oak bar. The space is full of lush green hanging plants and large bouquets. With a rotating prix fixe menu of family-style food, the restaurant offers four courses on Fridays and Saturdays, and three courses through the rest of the week. Every meal begins with a course titled ‘Breaking Bread’, a delightfully creative platter of fresh breads, cheeses, terrine and home-pickled vegetables. The menu changes to reflect the best produce of the season, but you can choose between a vegetarian or meat-based main, which comes with sides that can be shared among the table. The dishes are carefully prepared using expert techniques—meats are marinated, sous vide, and then charred, and vegetables are blanched and then pickled or slow roasted. This is sophisticated Californian comfort food, made with skill and heart. As well as an eclectic wine and beer list, they offer craft cocktails with housemade bitters and barrel-aged spirits.
