Oak trees and gorgeous Bay views

Across the bridge from San Francisco, Oakland has a enough for a few pleasant days. The city is home to the USS Potomac, alongside the city’s museum, art galleries, and parks. Shopping is fun in Oakland too, especially if you have a passion for hats - there is no men’s hat store quite like The Hat Guys. For gifts, souvenirs, good dining, and other shopping opportunities, follow College Avenue - it’s a local favorite.

I love the feel of this place—the wooden shelves and jars of alluring herbs and spices reminiscent of an old apothecary straight out of Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley. It’s fun to go and buy ingredients you never knew you needed, walking out with a pinch of wormwood, gentian root and mugwort to make your very own vermouth.

High-quality culinary spices Editors' Note

Oaktown Spice Shop is the best destination in town for quality herbs and spices. The store was also the first of its kind to open in the city, a pioneer in its niche, and it still leads the top. Go for specialty blends like Better Than Anything Bagel Spice, Moroccan Fish Tagine, and Hot and Smoky Adobo.

John Beaver and Erica Perez’s Oaktown Spice Shop sells different kosher salts, peppercorns, herbs, and spices, as well as organic teas, books, and gifts. Don’t ignore their amazing smoked paprika shelf.
