Shanghai, Pearl of the East

Reviving its golden days in the 1930s, Shanghai is grabbing the world’s attention again as the most dynamic metropolis in China. From the jaw-dropping skyscrapers in Lujiazui to numerous cosy cafés in the French Concession, this is where East meets West, traditional meets modern, and the grassroots coexists with the luxurious in harmony. Whether you’re a backpacker or a jetsetter, you can always find what suits you best.

Gallery for talented up-and-coming artists

Gallery for talented up-and-coming artists Editors' Note

Founded in 1998, BizArt has developed a strong reputation for conceptual art over the years. Run by one of Shanghai’s top conceptual artists, Xu Zhen, it is always seeking to push the envelope and it is much more about nurturing young artists than selling paintings.

It’s a bit like a training camp for young artists, many of whom graduate to bigger galleries, and as you might expect, the quality is variable, with the notable exception of artists such as Jin Feng and Zhou Xiaohu.
